I have recently completed my CFI initial checkride with Mr. Lleras which I chose to do my CFI-I first. The oral was approximately 4.5 hours long, 2 - 2.5 of FOI and the rest was instrument work, such as teaching GPS, VOR, ILS basic operations and all other information associated with it. The FOI was simple, all situational based with regard to most of what was in the aviation instructors handbook, with a few quirks of his own. The instrument stuff was also pretty simple, as I studied very hard the previous 30 days. We finished the oral with me teaching an instrument approach plate with a DME arc, only the end he wanted me to calculate my descent rate and time to reach my MDA at my MAP, which was not very logical, so I had calculated a descent rate that would reach my MDA prior, and that isnt what he wanted. I couldnt get an exact number, so he told me that if the flight wasnt up to standards, we would re-do the Oral and Flight portion of the exam (focusing on that one equation I assume)

It is so hard in the Fort Lauderdale area to find an examiner, so I had to choose him. Never again! I´d rather wait another week than pushing it.

This gentleman has been in aviation nearly 50 years. With that said you can imagine he is a plethora of information and knows his aviation completely. Mr. Lleras is a by the book examiner in terms of your evaluation. If he has an inkling you are unsafe or you don't meet PTS your not passing. So you better know your stuff or know how to find it in the materials. He stumped me but gave me ample time to find the answer. He even pointed it out because I was in the right place but the answer was so freaking vague. He asks his questions very vaguely, so follow along in the PTS so you know what he is getting at. He will follow the PTS and dig deeper and wider on subjects you may be weak on. Make sure ALL your paperwork especially plane logs are complete and dated.

Long story short, I passed on my first try (CFIAinitial). Oral was about 3 hours 15 minutes, flight was 2.2. A friend failed with him the previous week and several others I was in AF academy with canceled as a result.... I decided not to. It sounds cliche but when it gets down to it you either know the material or you don't and the results of the practical show that.

Strict rules for the oral. No pauses except urgent needs, no drinking, no eating.
